Restoration of a Grade II listed Victorian park

The project, which was funded from a successful bid from the National Heritage Fund and The National Lottery Heritage Community Fund, involved two phases of work:

The first phase saw the repair of the perimeter walls, 15 gates and gate posts, and the Hammersley Fountain, which had been derelict since the early 20th century.

The second phase saw the restoration of the main pavilion, bandstand, canal bridge and the boathouse as well as minor works to the gatehouses and north pavilion.

The main pavilion required extensive structural repair following dry rot damage in the main roof trusses and the clock tower, which were all taken off for repair and replaced. The building itself was converted into a public cafe with disabled access and toilets.

The project was carried out in partnership with Plincke Landscapes Ltd, who designed the associated landscaping works. In October 2020, the park was awarded Green Flag status and recognised nationally as a quality green public space by the charity Keep Britain Tidy.
